STIMSON IN ACTION
Dream Hunt 2018
October 31, 2018
For 12 years, Stimson has hosted a dream hunt in collaboration with the Outdoor Dream Foundation and Tillamook chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The Outdoor Dream Foundation is a nonprofit organization that grants outdoor adventures to kids with terminal or life threatening illnesses.
In 2018, the guest hunter was 14-year old Grace Claytor from Chapin, South Carolina. Grace was diagnosed with Brittle Bone Disease and thyroid cancer when she was eight years old. Early this year, her twin sister, who was diagnosed with the same disease, passed away.
Grace’s Hunt
This year’s hunt took place on Stimson’s Whisky Creek tree farm on Cape Lookout near Tillamook Oregon. Grace was accompanied on the hunt by her father and a cameraman from Outdoor Dream TV. Lodging was provided at the Whiskey Creek Retreat located next to Netarts Bay and one minute away from Stimson’s Whisky Creek gate.
The day of the hunt was spent glassing and driving around the tree farm before a herd of elk was spotted about an hour before sunset. Grace got into position for a shot, just in case a bull showed up. When a 4×7 bull walked out of the timber at 400 yards, we started cow calling and pulled him into rifle range for Grace. She shot the bull and he went down right in the road. We then loaded up the bull and headed over to the taxidermist.
For the remainder of the week, Grace enjoyed many Oregon Coast activities including crabbing, checking out the sand dollar beds in Netarts Bay, attending a crab feed, and going on her first horseback ride.
